Artist talk: Yngvild K. Rolland / Portrait of a Woman at the Piano

Yngvild K. Rolland’s conceptual practice incorporates a wide variety of visual media and sound. The past decade she has focused on connections between music and art, and the materiality of sound, using music instruments as materials and as motifs for interpretation. In most of her work audible sound is not present, leaving the focus on the visual object, image or text. There is a constant shifting perspective of what is there and what is not there, history and present, performer and spectator. This way of dealing with absence, negatives and contradictions is characteristic for Rolland's work.

Yngvild Kingren Rolland (b. 1977) lives and works in Oslo, with past residencies in New York and Paris. She has a Bachelor's degree form Camberwell College of Arts in London and Master's degree from Oslo National Academy of the Arts.
